Sarah Thornton - Seven Days in the Art World / Sarah Thornton - Șapte zile în lumea artei

The book Seven Days in the Art Word by Sarah Thornton is an X-ray of the art world and presents its main features as well as the complex and diverse structure around contemporary art. Sarah Thornton suggests that the main reason for writing this work, is that the world of art has exploded, with works of art selling for increasingly exorbitant sums, which in turn, draws the attention of a growing audience that is beginning to perceive art as a luxury, refined goods, dedicated to those with a certain level of education who are able to understand art. The increase in the number of those interested in art or art enthusiasts can be seen by the increasing number of visitors to art museums, the increasing number of institutions dealing with art (museums, galleries, art schools) and by the increasing number of publications about the art world. The book is structured in chapters, each representing a different corner of the world of art, having a chapter to present an auction at the famous Ch...

Ophelia, John Everett Millais - Analysis / Analiză

Ophelia is an oil painting done by John Everett Millais around the year 1851, as part of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. As we can tell from the title, the central theme of this work of art is inspired by a well known scene in the world of English literature, the drowning of Ophelia from the Shakespearian play Hamlet : driven to madness by her father’s death, Ophelia climbs on a willow branch and starts to weave flower garlands, while singing; when the branch beneath her breaks in half, she falls into the river; instead of fighting to get out, Ophelia keeps on singing, while sinking slowly in the muddy water. The play dates from the early 17th century, but the actual time period in which the action takes place is uncertain; while it’s being speculated that the writer’s source of inspiration is a Saxon chronicle from the 13th century, a chronological landmark is never mentioned in the play. First of all, we must turn our attention to the natural setting, which illustrates the attention ...

The presence of the holy Arpadian kings in the churches of the nobility: cult or social aspiration? - Iconographic analysis / Prezența regilor sfinți arpadieni în bisericile nobilimii: cult sau aspirație socială? - Analiză iconografică

Case study: The iconographic cycle in the church of Mălâncrav .      This essay aims to highlight the presence of the holy Arpadian kings in the churches of the nobility in Transylvania and the Kingdom of medieval Hungary, trying to elucidate the way in which the nobility perceives the dynastic sanctity, more precisely, whether the rendering of the three saints in churches represents a social aspiration or a cult.    The cult of the three Hungarian holy kings is initially diffused in the kingdom with the support of the Arpadian dynasty. Stephen I, the first Christian king of the Kingdom of medieval Hungary, ruled between 1000 / 1001-1038 and was one of the main promoters of Christianity. In his lifetime, based on the principle of primogeniture, he named his son Emeric (Imre) as heir to the royal throne, but died in 1031 without being crowned. In 1083 both Stephen I and his son Emeric are canonized at the initiative of King Ladislas I (1077-1095), [1] a...
