If
I had to make a list of movies that truly left a mark on me, Loving Vincent would surely be on the
first place. This movie is impressive not only through the story that is
unfolding right before our eyes, that of Armand Roulin, the son of a mailman,
who tries to piece together the last days of painter Vincent van Gogh, but also
through the way the story is being told: each frame, 65,000 in total, is an oil
painting done in the same manner as the famous works of the Dutch artist.
Before
starting, it must be noted that, after all, the movie is mostly a work of
fiction. That being said, even though the majority of the characters are based
on real people, their relationships and their lines „belong” to the
screenwriters. The storyline is easy to follow. While there are a few plot
twists along the way, these have the purpose of keeping the spectator’s
interest awake and to make them search for possible meanings and solutions.
Regarding the way the message is being delivered, my opinion is that the
writers did a more than wonderful job of camouflaging it throughout the movie
and bringing it to light right in the last minute, when both Armand and us – the people outside the screen – were thinking
that all this journey was actually useless and that the ending would be a
disappointing one. Even though these are not the exact words of the artist, the
message is crystal clear: whatever happens and whatever people around you say,
you must never lose your hope and you must continue the path you chose.
From
my point of view, the story and its course manage to wake such strong feelings
deep inside, that you end up feeling like you actually went on this journey of
discovering Van Gogh, alongside Armand. Curiosity, sadness, confusion, joy, are
all only a part of the emotions I went through during these 95 minutes. After
watching the movie, I felt a much stronger attachment to the painter’s works,
and I am sure that even people that are not that familiar with his paintings
will end up feeling the exact same.
This
being said, I believe that this movie is addressed to everyone that, sometimes,
forgets to have more faith in themselves and what they do, to those that don’t
succeed in pulling the curtains and seeing that the sun shines on everything
around, including on them. It addresses the artists that don’t believe their
work will have an impact on the world and are thinking more of giving up. Those
are the people I recommend the movie to, but also to the people that are simply
passionate about art and, for an hour and a half, want to step in the universe
