What’s the role of art in society? How does it influences us?
Does art have a meaning, and if the answer is “yes”, how can we find it? These
are just some of the questions that John Berger (art critic), the author
of Ways of Seeing, in collaboration with Sven Blomberg (painter),
Chris Fox (editor), Michael Dibb (filmmaker), and Richard Hollis (graphic
designer), is trying to answer in his work.
The book consists of a
series of both written and visual essays, the latter being, actually, the main
arguments of the author regarding a particular issue he raises. Its purpose is
settled from the beginning: to raise, among the readers, a series of questions
regarding the aspects of art, but to also allow the criticism of the reasoning
of the writers. The target audience is a broad one – it has been conceived to
be comprehended by any category of people, regardless of their knowledge in the
domain of art. However, the authors are often using the arguments and the
studies of the art historians.
The total number of the
essays of which the book consists raises to seven: four written essays, and
three visual ones. Each one of them treats a different issue, and the order in
which you can read them is purely aleatory. What they have in common is the fact
that they all address the same question: how do we interpret that type of art?
In searching for the answers, the authors tried to bring both historical and
professional arguments, regarding the interpretation of the works of art or the
psychological effect that they had (or still have) among people. The problems
being raised run the gamut from the way in which we decipher an artwork, to the
impact they had in society, they try to see the evolution of their
interpretation through the ages and the standards through which they were
filtered.
Even though, at first
glance, the book may seem a scientific one, the authors express themselves in a
subjective manner, emphasizing the fact that the arguments that they bring are
mere personal opinions, leaving room for criticism and for the reader to
interpret, in his own way, the facts discussed in the book.
As a reader, Ways of Seeing opened my horizon to
a whole new perspective of art, and to new ways of analyzing which I probably
wouldn’t be able to learn on my own. Even though the book is trying to clarify
some mysteries regarding the art, in my case, it succeeded in doing the
following: as I gained a new perspective, I raised myself some even more
ambiguous questions, which require an even higher and profound level of knowledge in
order to comprehend them.

Care
este rolul artei în societate? Cum ne influențează aceasta? Are arta vreun sens
Ca cititor, Ways of
